MACares: Community giving in local schools

What is MACares?
A program of the McCallum High School PTSA, MACares provides emergency financial assistance to local families who need help to bridge a crisis. It began 15+ years ago when a group of parents collected funds for a family in need at their school.

What support does MACares provide?
Some families lose a job or face a health crisis that makes them fall behind on rent or utilities. MACares helps them catch up. It also equips school staff with grocery gift cards and bus passes for families in need, as well as covers AP exam fees for students who cannot afford them.

How does MACares respond?
MACares volunteers (a group of parents from McCallum and other schools in the vertical team) review an application to determine if funds should be disbursed. The PTSA Treasurer pays the bill directly (families do not receive funds directly). 

Are there limits to MACares funds?
Funds are generally limited to $1,500 per family (one time).

How is MACares funded?
MACares receives donations from parents, other community members, and area churches and businesses.

If You Need Help or Know Someone Who Needs Help

Contact your school’s Licensed Mental Health Professional at your home campus. They will guide you through the process of applying for assistance from MACares. Since each family may only be helped by MACares one time, the LMHPs will work with your family to connect you with other community resources, as well.
